Description

Are the LCD-optimized fonts (commit 7276c3a) not used any more? In any case, they look ugly and needlessly invalidates most images in the automated test suite.

I'm on it. Some config snippets have moved from /etc to /usr on Jessie.

I've fixed the symlinks (bc874db). Looks better?

Hmm, it actually doesn't look much better. anonym, can you please confirm?

If so, then next step would be to try removing all our custom fonts configuration. It might be that it interacts badly with the default one, and it might be that the default configuration just does the right thing on Jessie.

Tried that, and the result doesn't look good any better here (libvirt/KVM, QXL virtual graphics adapter).

One way to improve this could be to play with the font settings in gnome-tweak-tool, find something that gives a nice result, look at the saved config files (~/.fonts, I guess) and turn it into a system-wide configuration.

OTOH, it might be that things now work fine on bare metal, i.e. LCD panels might be auto-detected and the fontconfig configuration adjusted accordingly. I've not tested that. It would be a shame if we optimized things for running in a VM, without noticing that we're making it worse on bare metal.

OK, I think I have something that looks better. Only the bold font in the apps menu still seem blury and ugly, the rest looks very good. anonym, please confirm.

(And I'm curious if GNOME Classic's apps menu is affected. Maybe the last bit that's ugly will be solved by migrating away from GNOME Flashback :)

Raising priority, and setting due date, for the same reason as #7563 that's block by this ticket. The same question asked there is valid here as well.

The fonts look good to me but I'm certainly not a font connoisseur.
