End-user documentation

Starter:

Affected tool:
Email Client

Description

There was Thunderbird documentation that still hangs around, but needs to be updated:
https://tails.boum.org/doc/anonymous_internet/thunderbird/index.en.html

  • Explain briefly the benefits of an email client over webmail in the context of Tails:
    • Faster interactions
    • Easier to do OpenPGP

Also, it's likely that some Tails-specific aspects need to be documented, as a result of e.g. #6154 and #6151.

sajolida, is anything blocking you from working on this ticket? (Yes, I'm a bit worried of the lack of (public) progress on this ticket given that the freeze is < 1 week away. :))

To be frank, I was waiting for the freeze to start working on the documentation. I know it's bad for the translators but it ensures that the thing I'm documenting won't change in between. I didn't really put the energy needed to follow up the technical work and I'm not sure where you're at. If you tell me that the integration work is done and that enough investigation has been made regarding the migration for me to start writing the doc, then I can try to do that before the freeze. But right now I still see that #9495, #9494, #9303, and most of all #7773 are far from being clarified.

Also, there will be no testing of the docs during the RC.

Ok. It's unfortunate, but I can understand you. Let's call this initial inclusion of Icedove a "tech preview", or something.

  • Assignee changed from sajolida to u

My draft is ready. Please review! I'm assigning this to u who's been working on the other part of the doc as well, but anonym of kytv could do this too.

A few comments:

  • Tell me what you think of my usage of "Icedove" vs "Thunderbird"
  • I'm not linking anymore to the Riseup unlike we were doing for Claws. I believe Icedove to be much easier to configure and I don't really like otherwise the idea of whitelisting email providers.
  • Note that I'm not taking into account any aspects related to the migration (migration instructions, status of the tech preview, etc.). This will be in #9495.
  • Unlike the old Thunderbird documentation I'm not selling the benefits of email clients over webmail. Tell me if you think I really should.
  • 4f4be6a is OT, please be kind!

Actually, I'll work on #9495 in the same branch so to review on this part (for the moment) please check it until commit b0abc3b.
