Description

In Tails 0.12.1, I manage to connect to a FTP server on the Internet (such as ftp.de.debian.org) neither with iceweasel nor with GNOME "Connect to server" feature.

At least the latter works properly to connect to a FTP server on the LAN by IP.

See bug 3290 on Tor Project's Trac.

The 1259 Tor ticket has a workaround, with poor usability. 3290 should not have been closed IMO. Commented there. In any case, the problem remains.

Still in Tails 1.4.1

Actually, I take that back, I was too impatient :). Works in 1.4.1 (with ftp.de.debian.org)

See the linked upstream tickets: that's a fundamental design issue with FTP vs. Tor, and the expected user-visible outcome is that it sometimes works... and sometimes doesn't.

That sounds like a problem if people use Tails for working on websites not reachable via FTPS or SSH. Seems to still persist nowadays.

It does not look like what we would need will ever be done in tor.
